Ajinomoto Group Expands Bases and
Strengthens Sales in Mexico and South America

Opening of Branches in Mexico and Chile


 December 22th, 2004 - Tokyo - Ajinomoto Co., Inc. (Ajinomoto, President & CEO: Kunio Egashira; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan) will mark approximately 50 years of operations in South and Central America by expanding its bases and strengthening its sales structure in the region with the opening of sales branches in Mexico and Chile.

 First, Ajinomoto will open the Mexico Branch (General Manager: Daniel Bercovici, Location: Mexico City) of Ajinomoto Biolatina Ind?stria e Com?rcio Ltda, a Brazilian affiliate. The new branch will help Ajinomoto to participate fully and expand its share in the Mexican market for feed -use amino acids, which is one of the world's 5 largest market.
 In Chile, Ajinomoto aims to expand sales by establishing the Iquique Branch (General Manager: Cesar Urbano, Location: Iquique City, Republic of Chile) of Ajinomoto del Per? S.A. to begin sales of AJI-NO-MOTO, soy sauce and other seasonings familiar in the Andean countries. In both cases, Ajinomoto will dispatch non-Japanese executives from the respective subsidiaries to conduct management with strong local ties.

 Currently Ajinomoto is investing further JPY 20 billion to build plants in addition to the existing 3 factories to produce feed-grade amino acids and amino acids for pharmaceuticals and foods in Brazil, where abundant main raw materials is available. In addition to supplying Latin America, Brazil will be Ajinomoto's largest export base for supplying amino acid raw materials around the world. Amid the recent trend of Japanese companies withdrawing from South America, Ajinomoto is investing aggressively in the region, and has already established sales companies and branch offices to sell processed foods and seasonings in three countries such as Ecuador, Panama and Bolivia.

 As its marketing strategy for South America, Ajinomoto will closely monitor concrete steps to integrate Mercosur and the Andean Community, which includes Peru, by further expansions of sales bases through strengthened local marketing.

1.About the Mexico Branch
 Ajinomoto Co., Inc. ("Ajinomoto") has opened a branch of Ajinomoto Biolatina Ind?stria e Com?rcio Ltda. ("Ajinomoto Biolatina") in Mexico to reinforce its sales of feed-use amino acids in that country. The branch, which is located on Paseo de la Reforma Street in Mexico City, is scheduled to start sales activities at the beginning of 2005.
 The Mexican feed-use amino acid market is one of the largest in the world and the second largest in Latin America after Brazil, where Ajinomoto Biolatina is located, and high growth is expected in the future. Ajinomoto Biolatina currently handles sales and marketing activities for Mexico from S?o Paulo, Brazil. By opening a new branch in Mexico, Ajinomoto Biolatina will be able to conduct regional sales and marketing activities in closer proximity to its customers there. After starting operations with sales of feed-use amino acids, the branch plans to expand its lineup to include other Ajinomoto products.

 Ajinomoto's feed-use amino acid business has production bases at six locations worldwide (France, Italy, the United States, Thailand, China and Brazil), and conducts its business globally as the AJINOMOTO ANIMAL NUTRITION group. As a supply base both for the growing Latin American market and worldwide, Ajinomoto Biolatina is now constructing its second feed-grade Lysine plant in Pederneiras, S?o Paulo, Brazil, with an investment amount of JPY 9.5 billion (BRL 260 million).
