Toward the realization of "Ajinomoto Group Zero Emissions"
Chuo Ace Logistics Corporation achieves
"Green Management Certification"

Chuo Ace Logistics Corporation promotes environmentally friendly logistics

Ajinomoto Co., Inc. (President & CEO: Kunio Egashira; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan) has been committed to global environmental protection activities under the "Ajinomoto Group Zero Emissions*1." In line with this commitment, the domestic logistics sector of the Ajinomoto Group, including AJINOMOTO LOGISTICS CORPORATION that oversees the group's general logistics operation, is working to reduce the environmental impacts aiming for Environmentally Friendly Logistics. As a result of the effort, Chuo Ace Logistics Corporation (President: Hirotaka Sano; Headquarters: Kawasaki, Kanagawa), a subsidiary of AJINOMOTO LOGISTICS CORPORATION, has obtained the certification of the "Green Management Certification System*2" as a trailblazer of the Ajinomoto logistics group on October 8, 2004.

While the trucking industry plays an important role in developing the economic activities and improving the quality of people's life in Japan; hazardous air pollutants, carbon dioxide, and noise associated with truck transportation cause significant adverse effects to the environment, like air pollution and global warming. So, as the corporate social responsibility, trucking firms are necessary to take further efforts to reduce their environmental impacts by such as the acquisition of ISO14001, an international standard of environmental management systems. However, under the low cost competition, it is very difficult for them to obtain ISO 14001 since over 90% of the total domestic trucking firms (about 58,000) are in small scale and are in shortage of capital and human resources.

Taking this into consideration, the Foundation for Promoting Personal Mobility and Ecological Transportation(EcoMo Foundation*3), an affiliated organization of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport(MLIT) launched the "Green Management Certification System" that certifies environmental management of transportation companies in October 2003. The acquisition cost of this certification is much less than that of ISO14001. The "Green Management Certification" requires the evaluation items including "establishment of the implementation structure, including responses to regulatory requirements," "environmental education to employees," "preparation of implementation structure of environment-friendly driving," "practice of idling stop," and "development of implementation system for inspection and maintenance."

Ajinomoto logistics group will aim for achieving "Green Management Certification" of all the transportation subsidiaries by taking Chuo Ace Logistics Corporation as a role model, and also promote further environmental activities by obtaining ISO14001 of AJINOMOTO LOGISTICS CORPORATION, the center of Ajinomoto logistics group.
