The Ajinomoto Group has R&D hubs around the world, and is building an organizational structure to promote strategic R&D linked more closely with business operations, while exchanging human resources globally. Efforts are focused on strengthening collaboration among the three research laboratories of Ajinomoto Co., Inc. and the R&D departments of group companies, while also making active use of open innovation with research institutions and other companies in Japan and overseas.

As group companies specializing in R&D, SHANGHAI AJINOMOTO FOOD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER CO., LTD. conducts R&D in the field of food products and ZAO "AJINOMOTO-GENETIKA Research Institute" (AGRI) in Russia conducts R&D on amino acid/nucleotide-producing fermentative microorganisms. R&D is undertaken through cooperation with the R&D departments of group companies, including AJINOMOTO PHARMACEUTICALS CO., LTD., Ajinomoto Frozen Foods Co., Inc., Ajinomoto Fine-Techno Co., Inc., Knorr Foods Co., Ltd., and S.A. Ajinomoto OmniChem N.V. (Belgium). In addition, group companies in Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, the U.S.A., France and China contain Regional Technology Centers that function as overseas bases for fermentation technology and food product development.

R&D - related Departments

R&D Planning Department

The R&D Planning Department of Ajinomoto Co., Inc. conducts overall management and supervision of the Ajinomoto Group R&D, such as determining subjects of research, assessment and resource allocation, management of R&D personnel, etc., in cooperation with laboratories and related departments to improve efficiency in R&D and to achieve optimum outcomes. The department also handles the globalization of R&D bases, promotion of open and linked innovations, mid- and long-term planning and R&D support of new businesses and products, as well as the support of business operations for market introduction.

Intellectual Property Department

The Intellectual Property Department of Ajinomoto Co., Inc. exercises control over the intellectual properties of the entire Ajinomoto Group. The department acquires and protects intellectual properties such as patent and trademark rights. Furthermore, in coordination with the R&D department and other business units, the Intellectual Property Department plans, reviews, and negotiates contracts on joint research to develop intellectual properties.

The Institute of Food Sciences and Technologies in the Food Products Division promotes R&D and the industrialization of seasonings, food products and health foods, and connects them to business.Food-related R&D is primarily conducted at the Institute , with collaboration among domestic and overseas group companies including Knorr Foods Co., Ltd., Ajinomoto Frozen Foods Co., Inc. and SHANGHAI AJINOMOTO FOOD RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER CO., LTD. The Research Institute for Bioscience Products & Fine Chemicals in the Bioscience Products & Fine Chemicals Division promotes R&D and industrialization related to the manufacture and new application of materials and products, such as amino acids and nucleotides, and connects them to business. Research to improve amino acid, nucleotide and other fermentation processes is conducted by the institute in collaboration with ZAO "AJINOMOTO-GENETIKA Research Institute" (AGRI) in Russia.

Based on "clinical nutrition" which began with the application of amino acids, the Drug Discovery Research Center of AJINOMOTO PHARMACEUTICALS CO., LTD. focuses on digestive disorders and metabolic diseases. With many years of research achievement, the center carries out research regarding life cycle management and promotes the development of drugs which can contribute to advanced medical care. The center also conducts safety assessments for the Ajinomoto Group's products.

Ajinomoto Fine-Techno Co., Inc.'s core businesses are functional chemicals, electronic materials, and activated carbon. Our functional chemicals operation originates in the development and commercialization of amino acid derivatives for industrial use such as resin additives. In the field of electronics materials, we have developed inter-layer insulation material for build-up print wiring board applied for IC package, solder resist for TCP and one-component epoxy adhesive.

The R&D section of Ajinomoto Frozen Foods Co., Inc. is comprised of the R&D Center and the Technology & Engineering department.
The role of each section's functions are divided into software and hardware development.
The R&D Center clarifies the functions of raw materials, basic research for the next generation's frozen foods and developing and industrializing new items by based on concepts.
The Technology & Engineering department is developing new manufacturing technology with the development and improvement of manufacturing facilities and packing materials.

The Knorr Foods Co., Ltd.'s Research & Development Center covers a wide range of product development in the Ajinomoto Group's processed food business by its unique "Chefmanship" idea. We run our own global raw material producers to purchase safe, secured and high quality raw materials for our products. In recent years, we also provide technology services to the Ajinomoto Group's global colleagues, such as R&D service, industrialization guidance, process and packaging technology services.

Our company was established in 2002 in Shanghai, China. We have two main missions. One is supporting food laboratories in Japan and our global affiliates for researching and developing in food categories. The other is developing new products in China. We have more than a hundred staffs and aim to deliver high quality data, technical information and products with achieving speedy & low cost operation.


ZAO "AJINOMOTO-GENETIKA Research Institute" (AGRI)

AGRI was established in 1998 as a joint venture between Ajinomoto and Genetika Research Institute, a state research institute. In 2003, AGRI became a wholly owned Ajinomoto subsidiary. This is the first research joint venture in Russia established by a foreign company. In collaboration with Ajinomoto, AGRI conducts research and development with a focus on breeding microorganisms for producing amino acids, nucleotides and other products through fermentation.
Ajinomoto Group production bases in countries worldwide use the microorganisms that AGRI breeds.

Ajinomoto OmniChem's R&D in Fine Chemicals offers strong technology platforms in chemistry and services for custom manufacturing of active pharmaceutical ingredients. The Natural Specialties division focuses on the development of extraction and purification processes of new botanical products ("extracts from nature") and their application for the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, cosmetic and textile market. The Tensiofix division supports the development of new surfactant mixtures for the formulation of agrochemical products.


Regional Technology Center

Regional Technology Centers have been established in overseas manufacturing plants to provide technical support to ensure stable production and to provide discussions on the use of new technologies. The centers support the development, introduction, and manufacture of new products according to regional circumstances and needs, train national staff, and gather and convey technical information.
