SANJA MATSURI

The Sanja Matsuri is a festival that takes place in May at the well-known Asakusa Shrine in the downtown area of Asakusa in Tokyo. The festival attracts large numbers of visitors who come to view the mikoshi (portable shrines used to carry a deity) as they thrust their way through the crowds on Nakamise Street. The cheering and applause of the crowds combined with the echoing calls of the shrine bearers make this an extremely lively festival. SANJA MATSURI image
