TORO NAGASHI (Lantern Offerings on the Water)

During the ceremony of Toro Nagashi, or "lantern offerings on the water," small paper lanterns containing lighted candles on a wooden or bamboo base are set afloat on the river or sea. In this memorial for the spirits of the dead many lanterns are floated upon the water, creating a fabulous sight. Recently, travelers from foreign countries come from far and wide to see this spectacle. TORO NAGASHI image
