Supporting the Physical and Mental Health of Employees Through Projects and Data-Driven Initiatives
Improving diet and nutrition is becoming increasingly important in Thai society
Thailand faces major social challenges, including rising rates of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) caused by nutritionally unbalanced diets and unhealthy eating habits. Concerns for employee health and well-being are also rising.
Ajinomoto Co. (Thailand), Ltd. (AJT) has long focused on improving the well-being of consumers, society, and employees under the company vision, (
Improving workplace nutrition based on the four pillars of workforce nutrition improvement
AJT works to create a joyful workplace through a range of initiatives, including programs aligned with the pillars advocated by the Workforce Nutrition Alliance (WNA).
Healthy food at work
AJT operates seven canteens at offices across Thailand, providing all employees with access to delicious, healthy foods planned by the vendor and the General Administration team to ensure that healthy menus are available to employees every day. These canteens offer employees a complimentary healthy dish three days per week (through “Healthy Corner”) The majority of the food provided at the employee canteens is classified as healthy based on AJT-specific healthy food and snack guidelines.
The AJT Food Print Program, developed jointly with external experts, enables canteen vendors to plan and calculate nutrition facts. This nutrition information for canteen menus is shared with employees through the proprietary i-LiveWell app.
Low uptake became a challenge during these initiatives as some employees preferred familiar meals over healthier menu options. AJT addressed this issue by organizing nutrition education sessions and campaigns promoting healthy menus to increase interest in nutrition. Employee satisfaction surveys now show that the overwhelming majority of employees are satisfied with company canteens.
Nutrition education
AJT provides all employees with access to nutrition education through various formats, including e-learning, the i-LiveWell app, and workshops.
AJT worked with internal nutritionists and external health and culinary experts to introduce interactive health sessions, games, and reward mechanisms in response to the initial low level of employee participation. The company continues to improve these initiatives to make participation easier and more appealing.
Nutrition health checks
In Thailand, employers are generally not required to conduct annual health check-ups for employees, except for those employees working in hazardous environments. However, AJT provides all employees with annual comprehensive health check-ups, including blood tests, free of charge. In addition, all employees have access to one-on-one health counseling with doctors and other healthcare professionals. Employees can access health check results and apply for consultations with professionals, including dietitians, through the i-LiveWell app. AJT also conducts annual mental health assessments and incorporates employee needs and feedback from these assessments.
As a result of such initiatives, the company annual health check participation rate reached 100%.
Breastfeeding support
All company offices are equipped with lactation rooms, meeting the needs of breastfeeding employees.
AJT also provides paid parental leave to support employees and their families. Female employees also have the opportunity to participate in breastfeeding support programs through online events and receive advice and support from nurses.
Expanding insights gained from workforce nutrition initiatives to society
AJT has also pursued further projects to support employee physical and mental health.
The New You Better You Project is a 90-day challenge aimed at supporting healthy weight management and promoting better overall health care and well-being. This project provides an intensive program for all employees looking to lose weight and improve their BMI. Workshops are also available at the head office and factory locations. Results showed that 60% of participants experienced reduced fat and increased muscle mass, with overall participant satisfaction reaching 95%.
The Clear Mind Better You Project is another AJT initiative that supports employee mental health. Alongside on-site workshops, the project provided programs for all participating employees, including those for daily stress management, mindfulness, exercise, and professional counseling. The majority of participants reported high satisfaction with the program.
AJT will continue supporting physical and mental health management through use of the i-LiveWell app, health check-ups, nutrition education, and the provision of healthy menus at workplaces. Managing data through the Food Print Program and other such tools, AJT supports healthy dietary practices among canteen vendors, administration divisions, and employees. At the same time, the company aims to develop this framework as a business and expand the health support platform across society. AJT is committed to fostering healthy lifestyles through efficient approaches that integrate data.
