Becoming a “group of companies that contributes to human health globally”—
R&D as a growth driver

Research & Development Strategies
The Ajinomoto Group R&D has credo and passion in our contribution to the future progress of people and the earth through promoting the health of customers.

Early in the 20th century, Dr. Kikunae Ikeda, with a strong desire “to create good, affordable seasonings and turn simple but nutritious fare into delicacies,” discovered the “umami” component of glutamate. Saburosuke Suzuki, founder of Ajinomoto Co., Inc., was the first in the world to use this discovery to create a “seasoning” business.
Since then, the Ajinomoto Group has continued to work for the advanced research and development of amino acids—the origin of our company’s establishment and one of the sources of life—and has developed novel technologies related to biotechnology, chemistry, pharmacology, food science, analytical chemistry and others. Conducting a wide range of R&D activities that makes active use of open innovations, we always give priority to the “safety of customer” to create new value for the future.
The Ajinomoto Group R&D aims to become a “group of companies that contributes to human health globally” as a growth driver. Its mission is to bear a leadership role in contributing to global sustainability, securing food resources, and healthy lifestyles.
With the strong credo and passion to propose new values to the customer for the next 100 years, it is our desire to remain as the heart of the Ajinomoto Group by listening attentively to the voice of customers as a Value Innovator.
In order to create new technologies and businesses which will exceed our umami seasoning, “AJI-NO-MOTO®” (monosodium glutamate), the Ajinomoto Group R&D will evolve for the better.
The Ajinomoto Group R&D will continue to move forward, step by step, for the sake of “food,” “health,” and “life,” and seek to expand the three areas in the future, especially where “Food,” “Bioscience Products & Fine Chemicals,” and “Pharmaceuticals & Health” overlap.
