The Ajinomoto Group’s greenhouse effect gas reduction targets approved by SBT initiative

On April 28, 2020, the Ajinomoto Group’s greenhouse effect gas reduction targets toward 2030 were approved by Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative*1 as to limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial temperatures.

 

The targets approved by SBT initiative:

Scope 1 + 2*2      FY2030: Reduce by 50% (vs. FY2018)

Scope 3*3             FY2030: Reduce by 24% (vs. FY2018)

In order to continue being an integral part of society, we need to conduct business activities that help transform society into an environmentally-friendly, low-carbon, circular economy. The Ajinomoto Group will continue contributing to global sustainability by determining of environmental impact across the entire lifecycle and initiatives to reduce such impact.

 

*1  The Science Based Targets initiative champions science-based target setting as a powerful way of boosting companies’ competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy. It is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.

*2  Scope 1: Direct greenhouse effect gas emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by the organization (burning fuel, industrial processes, vehicle use, etc.)

Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, heat, or steam consumed by the company

*3  Scope 3: Other indirect emissions (product use, disposal and transport, employee commuting and business travel, investment, etc.)
